As Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Australian cities are gearing up for unprecedented mobility needs. From 13 to 15 October, the UITP Academy brought together operators and transport authorities for a training programme dedicated to public transport during major events. Citec took part as a trainer, represented by Stefano Manelli, Director of Citec Italy.

Organised by UITP, the International Association of Public Transport, this UITP Academy session was aimed at the stakeholders who will be responsible for moving hundreds of thousands of spectators, athletes and residents throughout the Games. The programme covered the full spectrum: the impact of major events on urban mobility, operational and organisational challenges, crowd management, security and emergency planning, and smart mobility tools. The aim: to give Australian operators and authorities the keys to anticipate, size and manage a public transport network facing exceptional peaks in demand.
Paris, Milano Cortina: lessons learned shared in Brisbane
Drawing on his experience of the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups, UEFA Euro and Champions League finals, Stefano Manelli presented the Paris and Milano Cortina case studies. He spoke alongside Conan Cheung, Chief Operations Officer of LA Metro, whose network is in turn preparing to host the Los Angeles 2028 Games. These complementary perspectives allowed participants to compare practical approaches to planning, operations and coordination between stakeholders. Citec warmly thanks Sue Chan (UITP) and Catherine Baxter, Group Executive Public Transport Services at Brisbane City Council, as well as all participants for the quality of the discussions. Another opportunity for our Large events experts to share their know-how internationally and help ensure the success of tomorrow’s major sporting events.
